Bluetooth Printer
Bluetooth is a means to an end; like the dial tone of the telephone connection internet of yore, Bluetooth is merely a way for people to connect using wireless devices such as laptops, PDA, video games units, digital cameras, mobile phones, even printers via a short range radio frequency. Bluetooth is available on practically everything new that’s come out recently. But be warned, Bluetooth is not a very reliable network. Or, that is, Bluetooth isn’t the best at downloading large files, transferring lots of information, or securely submitting classified transmissions. For that you should be operating over a secure WiFi network, telephone or cable line, at the very least a more secure wireless Ethernet connection.

Likewise, Bluetooth printer is sort of a silly function. Unless you only have a very small document which needs printing, printing anything of any substance on Bluetooth is an exercise in futility. However, if you’re traveling abroad and you need to access an email with directions or even be able to mapquest something, Bluetooth is probably a good idea; using your Bluetooth to move to a printer is an even smarter enterprise.
Bluetooth accesses printers in a variety of ways. One is through direct connection via a USB or some approximation thereof. While that is sometimes an option, when you’re on the go or in a far off place, it’s not always so. What you’re able to do in this instance is send a wireless signal to a network; say at Staples or Kinko’s; pay for your print and then take it and go. Bluetooth printing is not inexpensive in places like that with rates going at sometimes one dollar or more per page for plain text! Prices go up and up for color reproductions. If you have the wherewithal and you know you’ll be using it enough or at least for a period of time, say on research expedition and you don’t want to have to keep going back to the central area you can get a Bluetooth portable printer. This is best used for a long term commitment but, if you’d use it enough, then it may just be worth it for a short term assignment. When searching for the best Bluetooth printers it’s tough to judge across the board. Much of it really depends on your need, your situation, your budget, and your temperament. A portable Bluetooth printer, for example, would probably be very slow in output but if you’d only need a few sheets an outing, maybe you can put up with that. |
